Turn your journey into art

When your family is bouncing around from one city to another, it’s easy to get caught up in to-do lists and sightseeing. But don’t forget to find ways to remember each location you call home – no matter how short your stay. Half the fun of this nomadic lifestyle is exploring, so find a way to commemorate each city and then incorporate it in your home décor.

Map your family’s journey

One way to show the places that life has taken you is by making or buying a map that shows each city where you’ve lived. The nice thing about this is that it is compact, can be customized with the colors you like and is available in every imaginable location. If there is a special saying or quote that you like, add it to the image. The downside is that once it is printed, it’s hard to modify when a new location enters your life.

The map pictured was ordered through an Etsy shop named Prints Inspired and includes this family’s significant life events in each city.

Wooden Duty Signs

These rustic signs have a company name or a branch of the military listed at the top along with your family’s name. Then a slat with a new city or base is added onto the bottom each time your family moves. It’s a smart option if you want to continue updating your artwork throughout the years and each additional slat usually costs just a few dollars.

State map art

You don’t even have to be crafty to pull off this simple wall art. All you do is print maps of the states you have lived in on photo paper, cut them out carefully and then display them in a floating glass frame. Place a heart sticker on the cities that are significant and you’re ready to display it!

Another way to remember each place you live is to start a collection. Some families choose items that are deeply meaningful, like religious crosses, while others like something small and easy to move, like magnets. Other ideas include Christmas ornaments, figurines or local sports memorabilia. The options are really endless. Some overachieving families even go so far as to have a baby in each location but that can be a tough pace to keep after a few years!
